Established in 1974, NECA is a registered charity and was founded initially as the North East Council on Alcoholism. The scope of NECA work widened as problems associated with drugs and solvents became prevalent, and to signify the increasingly diverse range of service provision offered it was decided to change the title of the organisation to the North East Council on Addictions.

Sunderland Carers’ Centre provides confidential advice, support and information to people who care for or are concerned about a family member or friend with a drug or alcohol problem. The Centre also offers carers support groups; support to carers at meetings with health, social services and other agencies; courses; social activities; complementary therapies; free newsletter every two months; and support and activities for young carers.

The service is provided to carers living in the City of Sunderland (including Houghton-le-Spring, Hetton-le-Hole and Washington).


The Huntercombe Centre (Tunstall Unit) - Four Seasons Health Care
Is a specialist alcohol and drug detoxification and rehabilitation facility, situated just outside Sunderland, in a modern, purpose built centre. http://www.fshc.co.uk/

The Coalfield Forum is a registered charitable community group working in the voluntary sector of Sunderland and is made up of local people, workers and organisations. We are constituted and have an elected Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. We also have acquired funding from Urban II, Big Lottery, Northern Rock Foundation, Sunderland City Council - Strategic Initiative Budget.
