HEALTH experts are desperate to get us to drink responsibly. As Alcohol Awareness Week begins today, Health Reporter Helen Rae finds out what is happening in the region to educate people about the dangers of drinking too much. HANGOVERS are not the only health hazard to worry about after a heavy night of boozing, as the toll too much alcohol takes on our bodies can, at times, be life-threatening.

Embrace is the Alcohol Concern children, families and domestic abuse project. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund for three years, Embrace is initially working with nine pilot sites across England to develop a more family-focused approach to their clients and to take account of domestic violence and abuse throughout their work.

THE battle against booze is being boosted by a £2.5million treatment programme to help alcoholics, health chiefs announced today. Launch of the NHS alcohol treatment services
PEOPLE in the North East are drinking too much, results from the region’s biggest public health debate have shown. Earlier this year The Big Drink Debate – conducted by Balance, the North East alcohol office – was launched to provide vital information and insight into drinking behaviour and attitudes held towards alcohol throughout the area. Drinkers and non-drinkers alike were asked to take part in the survey, which was supported by The Journal, and more than 13,000 took part.

Rock solid foundation for NERAF
The North East Regional Alcohol Forum (NERAF) has been awarded £101,601 by Northern Rock Foundation to develop their peer-led support services regionally over the next three years. Based in Sunderland, the UK’s ‘champion’ alcohol project (Drink and Drugs News) NERAF is developing a network of support services for problematic drinkers, their families and carers to help people turn their lives around.
